Children and the internet April 30, 2006

After reading chapter 11, it’s clear to me that children can be vulnerable to things on the internet.   I can understand why people and the government want to regulate the internet to protect our children from predators and from stumbling upon images they probably should not see.  However, shouldn’t the first line of defense be the parents and for them to dictate what their children can and cannot look at on the internet.  Maybe the parents of today’s children should take the computers out of their room place them in a common area where there is a parent around to prevent their children from stumbling onto something they should not.  In addition, the parents should limit or not permit their children to visit chat rooms.  I think maybe warning pages should be used and that maybe the teaser pages should not be allowed.  Maybe its time to set up a web address which is specifically for porn such as something ending in .adult.  This would help to prevent children from accidentally looking at porn websites.  There are many things that probably could be done to prevent our children from looking at the wrong things on the internet but maybe the first thing that should be looked at is parental responsibility.

I believe everything you said. Definitely, the first line of defense should be parents. Unfortunately, though, many parents do not pay enough attention to what their children are doing. Often the computer and the TV is used as baby sitters. I like your idea of all porn sites ending in .adult.

Thank you for this good post. Blessings,
